Step inside any art classroom in Murray County Schools, and you’ll quickly discover that creativity is alive and well—brightly painted on canvases, sketched in pencil lines, and built with eager hands and imaginative hearts.
During a recent visit, I had the chance to experience the joy of art class alongside our students and see firsthand the incredible work our teachers do to nurture creativity at every age.
At Woodlawn Elementary, I joined Ms. Michelle Watson and her third-grade students in a vibrant and welcoming classroom that practically radiated inspiration. As part of a large spring display, the students and I created whimsical clouds based on the beloved Louis Armstrong song What a Wonderful World. It truly was a wonderful world inside Ms. Watson’s class—students shared how much they look forward to Art each week and how proud they are to contribute to something that brings color and joy to their school hallways.
Over at Chatsworth Elementary, I had a blast stepping into Mrs. Sheri Carr’s classroom during Read Across America Week. Our Kindergarten artists were hard at work (and having so much fun!) creating Lorax-inspired art. Between bursts of laughter and globs of paint, the students told me how much they love the chance to create, relax, and just enjoy being kids. In a world full of routines and standards, art gives them the gift of expression and connection.
My tour wrapped up at North Murray High School for the annual art show—and wow, the talent was nothing short of breathtaking. From detailed portraits to mixed media pieces, our students showcased not only technical skill, but depth, emotion, and passion. Beyond the classroom, our students regularly shine at the North Georgia Fair, through exhibits with the Murray Arts Council, Creative Arts Guild, and at art showcases hosted at each of our schools.
This district is full of budding artists, and that wouldn’t be possible without the dedication of our amazing art educators. We’re proud to celebrate:
