At Murray County Schools, the safety of our students is our top priority, especially when it comes to school bus transportation. As we wrap up the school year, we encourage everyone—parents, guardians, students, and community members—to remember to actively promote and practice school bus safety.
One of the most critical aspects of school bus safety is the need for all drivers to stop when a school bus extends its stop arm and flashes its red lights. This indicates that students are boarding or disembarking the bus. It is not only a legal requirement but also a vital safety measure to prevent accidents and protect our children.
Even on a four-line highway, all cars must stop. The law is clear that the only exception is when a clear median separates the lane like a concrete median or extensive grass area. Turning lanes do not meet the requirements of the law.
To illustrate the importance of this safety practice, we invite you to watch the video we've included in this article.
